A SPECIALIZED APPROACH TO PAIN RELIEF:

CURAVITA Health Group is known for its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its patients through innovative health solutions. By teaming up with Tracy Corneau, a certified Johns Hopkins Yoga for Arthritis instructor, CURAVITA is broadening its services to include a complementary approach to managing arthritis and chronic pain.

Tracy brings a wealth of expertise, having undergone rigorous training with Johns Hopkins, a leader in evidence-based arthritis care. The Yoga for Arthritis program she leads is grounded in long-standing, peer-reviewed studies designed to support individuals living with both Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). The classes are specifically curated to help reduce joint pain and stiffness, improve flexibility, and enhance mobility—all without exacerbating symptoms.

Tracy’s focus on gentle, mindful movements ensures that participants can practice yoga safely, regardless of their fitness level or experience. The use of props, such as chairs, ensures accessibility for all participants. Additionally, Tracy offers personalized modifications, making the class suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

THE HOLISTIC BENEFITS OF YOGA FOR ARTHRITIS:

While the physical benefits of yoga are well-known, the Yoga for Arthritis program offers more than just improved joint function. Participants often report reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression—a key component in the management of chronic illness. The practice encourages mindfulness and relaxation, which are essential in managing the emotional toll of living with chronic pain.

In Tracy’s classes, participants will learn breathing techniques and meditative practices that can help alleviate pain, improve respiratory endurance, and boost overall well-being. Studies have shown that these mindfulness techniques can help grow grey matter in the brain, which supports cognitive functions and emotional resilience.

Moreover, regular yoga practice under Tracy’s guidance can enhance muscle strength, balance, and endurance, all while improving joint health and range of motion. These benefits translate into a better quality of life, making everyday tasks more manageable.

ADDRESSING A GROWING HEALTH CONCERN:

Arthritis affects 1 in 5 Canadians, or approximately 6 million people, according to the Arthritis Society. By 2040, that number is expected to rise by 50%, making arthritis the most common chronic condition in Canada. Women are particularly affected, with a higher likelihood of developing arthritis compared to men. In addition, 25,000 children in Canada also seek healthcare for arthritis, underscoring the widespread impact of this condition.

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, the two most prevalent forms of the disease, can severely limit mobility and function. Osteoarthritis is often associated with wear and tear on weight-bearing joints, while Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints.

Given the significant impact arthritis has on physical and mental health, CURAVITA Health Group’s decision to offer this specialized yoga program is timely. Yoga for Arthritis provides a safe and effective way to manage symptoms and improve overall health outcomes.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT YOGA AND ARTHRITIS:

There are many misconceptions about yoga, particularly when it comes to those living with arthritis. One common myth is that practicing yoga will worsen arthritis symptoms. However, this is not the case when yoga is practiced with proper guidance. Under Tracy’s supervision, participants are encouraged to move slowly and mindfully, making yoga a safe practice that can ease rather than exacerbate pain.

Another myth is that yoga requires extreme flexibility. In reality, yoga focuses on improving strength, balance, and range of motion—attributes that are particularly beneficial for arthritis patients. Tracy’s classes emphasize gentle movements and the use of supports, ensuring that every participant can safely engage in the practice.
