Upper, Middle + Lower Back Pain

Are you experiencing back pain?

B
ack pain is a problem that affects millions of Canadians. When your back hurts, many other things suffer too, like simple everyday tasks. There are many reasons for back pain, and chiropractic care can help you get back to your regular activities and enjoyment of life.

Back pain can take many forms, including upper back pain, middle back pain and lower back pain. Upper back pain, or thoracic pain, is a symptom commonly associated with poor posture. Adults and students are often affected due to prolonged hours spent in front of computers and electronic devices. Thoracic pain is commonly caused by restriction of joints in the spine and can be accompanied by rib pain that can produce pain in the back and chest with breathing. A chiropractor can help you correct your posture and ensure proper movement in the joints of the thoracic spine.

Pain in your mid back and between your shoulders can happen following an injury but can also be due to a long-standing issue such as bad posture or restricted movement in your spine. Pain in the thoraco-lumbar spine can radiate all the way down to the buttock.

Low back pain can present itself alone or with radiating leg pain frequently along the sciatic nerve – a condition often referred to as sciatica. The primary cause of low back pain is from mechanical malfunction in the spine due to postural issues, repeated stress or following an accident. Symptoms can arise immediately after a trauma or be delayed – sometimes only appearing years later.

Low back pain is the most common reason why people seek chiropractic care. Low back pain will affect 4 out 5 Canadians in their lifetime and is the primary cause of disability worldwide. Chiropractic care is a safe, non-invasive and effective approach to treating mechanical low back pain and is aimed at restoring proper spinal alignment with the ultimate goal of improving functionality, reducing nerve irritability and restoring range of motion in the back. It is also a safe and effective way to prevent low back pain and a chiropractor can help you with strategies such as exercise and lifestyle changes to keep it at bay.

Signs that you have back pain include a decreased range of motion, an inability stand straight, a dull ache in the lower back area, or a stabbing or shooting sensation that will sometimes radiate towards the foot.

If you’re experiencing back pain that persists for more 72 hours, you should seek professional advice, and if your conditions warrants it, you should consider the benefits of chiropractic care. In some instances, back pain can be a symptom of a larger health issue. In these instances, a timely and appropriate referral to other healthcare providers will be made by your chiropractor.

Plenty can be done. There’s always hope. Following a thorough consultation and a chiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological examination, the chiropractor will come to a diagnosis and make treatment recommendations. Recommendations for alleviating your back pain could include chiropractic care, massage therapy, physiotherapy, relaxation techniques and at-home exercises. In extreme cases, where these treatments don’t work, you may be a candidate for surgery. But generally speaking, most instances of back pain can be addressed with some combination of these much less invasive techniques.
